Summary Description: The Safety Coordinator is a member of the Manager of Reliability Compliance staff. This position supports the safety functions of the organization. This position provides coordination and direction for all NCEMC employees in maintaining an appropriate safety culture for all NCEMC business activities. This includes continuous improvement of safety practices and ensuring effective, consistent oversight of safety activities among the NCEMC organizations.
The Safety Coordinator ensures all NCEMC owned facilities have the programs, processes, and procedures in place to comply with federal and state regulations required to ensure employee safety. This includes the corporate office, NCEMC owned power generation sites, and the TEMA facility. In addition, this position assists in the reliability compliance efforts of the organization by maintaining and enhancing the documentation processes and assisting the Manager of Reliability Compliance to ensure timely completion of required information submittals.
Academic and Trade Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, environmental safety, engineering, or a related field from an accredited program is preferred. An associate’s degree with equivalent work experience in the safety field will also be considered. Designation as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or similar certification is highly desirable.
Work Experience: Five to seven years of industry experience as a safety professional with two to three of those years in a power plant or industrial environment is desired. Experience with significant responsibility for a comprehensive safety program is highly preferred. The applicant must have demonstrated experience in safety training and instruction.
Responsibilities:
• Implement and assume responsibility for a safety program which ensures that all activities of the NCEMC organizations are conducted in a manner which will protect the health and safety of employees, contractors, and the general public and which will ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state laws, rules or regulations regarding health and safety
• Maintain and update as necessary NCEMC Statewide Safety Manual
• Maintain and update as necessary power plant Environmental, Health and Safety Manual
• Provide leadership and direction for all statewide employees to promote safe conduct in the performance of all business activities; provide direction and oversight of the safety-related activities in each organization
• Coordinate with the Legal Department and Human Resources (HR) to investigate accidents or injuries and make recommendations to rectify unsafe practices and/or conditions and prevent recurrence.
• Manage the NCEMC Safety Compliance Plan
• Monitor compliance with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations, and provide periodic compliance assessments and audits for each NCEMC organization and location.
• Ensure that appropriate records are kept that demonstrate compliance
• Maintain the Safety Compliance SharePoint site
• Participate in industry peer groups and training to stay current on technological advances and regulatory compliance requirements regarding health and safety
• Develop and implement safety training programs to ensure all statewide employees fully understand and comply with the requirements of the safety program at each NCEMC facility
• Conduct periodic safety meetings at each NCEMC facility
• Provide periodic safety training as required at each NCEMC facility
• Examples for the power plants include Switching and Tagging, Single Operator Communication Protocol, and Confined Space training
• Examples for TEMA include warehouse storage and forklift safety
• First Aid, CPR, AED training for all facilities
• Work with HR staff to develop and update electronic safety training modules
• Conduct orientation safety training for new employees
• Responsible for all National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) required system testing, training, and regulation changes affecting property and personnel at each NCEMC owned facility
• Ensure that all NCEMC employees have personal protective equipment, first aid, and other supplies necessary for safe performance of activities at each location
• Assist reliability compliance team with the gathering of documentation required for audits, self-certifications, and other data request as required by regulatory entities
• Maintain SharePoint document management systems associated with reliability compliance
Job Knowledge: Mastery of applicable federal and state safety standards, rules and regulations is a must. A basic knowledge of the electric utility industry and at least some familiarity with FERC and NERC regulatory standards is desirable. Must be able to effectively prepare written reports, memos, correspondence, and training presentations and be able to communicate effectively with others, both internal and external. The ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision is highly desired.
Abilities and Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required. The ability to utilize MS Teams as a communications tool is necessary for success. A detailed working knowledge about the use of personal computers is necessary, including software and hardware applications. Proficiency in SharePoint is desirable.

- Internal Relationships: Shall maintain internal relationships necessary to achieve the purpose of position and the desired results
- External Relationships: Shall maintain necessary external contacts and relationships to achieve desired results
Working Conditions: Normal working conditions, including some travel and responsibilities outside of normal business hours. Includes working shifts during crisis conditions, such as hurricanes and ice storms. A hybrid work schedule with up to two remote days per week.
