HMS Course Overview

The Hazardous Waste Management Specialist course from The National Association of Safety Professionals (NASP) offers students the opportunity to learn the regulations, standards and safety procedures associated with handling potentially hazardous materials. This comprehensive course covers the latest regulatory requirements, universal waste ordinances, VOC standards for hazardous waste generators, waste exemptions and exclusions, and waste minimization requirements.

Students who complete the hazardous waste management training and earn their specialization certificate will be able to:

  • Define, identify and correctly label hazardous waste.
  • Understand and apply applicable standards from OSHA, DOT, RCRA, CERCLA, SARA and TSCA.
  • Develop contingency plans for how to comply with land disposal restrictions.
  • Design and implement emergency response procedures.
  • Create manifests for different types of waste materials.

Students should expect the HMS training course to take approximately 13 hours to complete.

  • Continuing Education Units

    (1.30) CEUs are offered for this course. As an IACET Accredited Provider, NASP offers IACET CEUs for its learning events that comply with the ANSI/IACET Continuing Education and Training Standard. CEUs will be reflected on the Certificate upon successful completion of the course and passing the exam. Partial credit or adjusted CEUs will not be awarded for individuals who do not successfully meet the criteria for achievement of CEUs.

  • Online Exams

    The student will take a comprehensive online exam at the end of the course. You must score 80% to receive a certificate. You have two opportunities to pass the exam.

  • Recertification

    A refresher course and exam will be required every three (3) years. The cost of this recertification is $150.
