24 hours per week, $50 per hour, 14 weeks, must be age 55 or older
The NPS Experienced Services Program is a unique partnership created to help solve the workforce issues facing government agencies. The program connects experienced workers (age 55+) to the NPS to provide scientific, technical, and administrative support.
- This position supports Shenandoah National Park and may be performed remotely.
- NPS ESP positions are meant to provide temporary, project-based support. This position is currently funded for an estimate of 14 weeks.
- A background security investigation may be required prior to the start date. Only those positions with 30+ hours per week are eligible for health insurance benefits; all positions will accrue sick leave.
- The experienced workers participating in the Program are referred to as “Enrollees” and are not employees of the NPS or NEW Solutions. NEW Solutions is the ESP non-governmental organization responsible for administrative aspects of the program, and the Enrollees work under NPS direction to assist the Agency staff in carrying out their mission. NPS ESP Enrollees benefit from the opportunity to keep technical skills current; to access new training opportunities; to engage in gainful project-based positions; and to undertake meaningful tasks using their experience and talent to contribute to the environment, the national economy, and their own financial security.
Duties: The enrollee will provide professional expertise to the Park in building and establishing a safety program.
Identify best practices needed to establish a long-lasting safety program that is centered around employee accountability. The enrollee will review past program management and hazard analysis reports and synthesize the data to create the Park’s safety, health, and wellness program. The program will include safety policies that address health and wellness, aviation safety, fire safety, environmental safety, Search and Rescue (SAR) safety, and Prevention of Search and Rescue (PSAR). 50%
In addition, the enrollee will perform the following duties:
- Create a safety awards program that leads to cultural and continuous improvement.
- Prepare accident prevention promotional campaigns that assist employees with risk management. Develop, prepare, and review training plans and aids.
- Create a communication plan and an implementation plan for successful roll-out.
- After program implementation, the enrollee will serve as facilitator during the first three safety committee meetings.
- Before, during, and after program implementation, obtain feedback and comments and use the data collected to improve the program. 50%
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 15 year(s) of experience in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) or Environmental Management OR BA/BS Degree in Occupational Safety and Health or Environmental Management.
- Possess comprehensive knowledge of Parts 1910 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, ANSI, EPA, NFPA, and other applicable safety and health standards/manuals and policies.
- Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, Power Point, Adobe Acrobat
Required Certifications:
OSHA-related training for safety professionals; credentials, experience and training should be identified in resume.
Travel Requirements: A couple times during the enrollment period to meet park staff.
Overnight travel: Overnight travel could be required, depending on enrollee location
Physical requirements: The position is primarily sedentary in nature.
